| Audio Programs, How to Listen Online |
If you subscribe to Sound Education, you can listen to the audio programs you receive on your CD each month online as well. Audio programs from the June 2006 release of Sound Education are available online.
Note: to listen to the audio programs, your computer and Internet connection must meet certain minimum standards See Audios, Listening, Minimum System Requirements.
If you have difficulties viewing the videos online, see Audios, Listening, Troubleshooting.
To listen to an audio program online, follow the instructions below.
- Select recent papers for your service (see Recent Papers)
- Next to title of each program you are entitled to receive on CD, you will see a Play Audio button. (Note: you will not see this icon next to all program titles.)
- When you have chosen the program you wish to listen to, select (click on) Play Audio.
- The system will launch a floating window listing the program name, and giving you the option to pay the program.
- Make your choice and select (click on) the Play button.
- The system will display the audio player in the floating window and will commence playing.
- Use the controls below the player to pause, fast forward or rewind the program, or to control the volume of the sound.
- When you have finished, select (click on) Close Window at the bottom of the floating window.
Note:
1. While your subscription does entitle you to see the papers for all programs produced for your version of Sound Education, it may not entitle you to play the audio programs of every program produced. If the "Play Audio" icon does not display, your subscription probably does not entitle you to listen to it. See also note 2 below.
2. The topics are generally listed before the papers or the audios are loaded. Your audio entitlements should always be displayed for the current month within ten days of its commencement.

| Audio Programs, Listening, Minimum System Requirements
|
Our videos do not impose significant overhead on most modern computers. However, there are certain minimum requirements you will need to view them. If you are confused, speak to your system administrator or computer guru.
Your computer must have:
- A sound card
- Speakers
- Windows Vista, Windows XP (Home or Professional) or Windows 2000 Professional
- Pentium 3 processor, equivalent or greater (most do)
- Internet Explorer 7.0 or 6.0 (web browser)
You must have Windows Media Player 9 or higher
- Windows Media Player usually comes pre-installed with Internet Explorer.
- If you do not have it, you can download the current version (WMP 10) free from the Microsoft website:
Visit Microsoft Website
Your Internet connection
Can be broadband or dialup. Fewer problems will be experienced using broadband.
Our service does not support earlier Windows operating systems or any versions of Mac OS (Apple).
The audio programs may play, but we cannot guarantee it.

| Audio Programs, Listening, Troubleshooting
|
If you are unable to get one of our audio programs to play, before calling Customer Service, check whether the solution to your problem is in the list below.
- The floating window does not appear when I select Play Audio
Your browser may be set to block pop-up windows. Internet Explorer will give you an option when you select Play Video to allow pop-ups permanently from our site. You should select this option.
Alternatively, your security or network settings may prevent the floating window launching.
If you are having this problem, please speak to your network administrator.
- The floating window appears, but when I select Play nothing happens/the player does not appear/the controls do not appear.
The most likely cause is that you do not have Windows Media Player installed on your computer, or if you do, you have an earlier version. Get the latest version free from Microsoft.
Visit Microsoft Website
- The audio plays, but some of the player controls do not work
If the audio program has just commenced playing, it is possible that the file containing the audio has not been fully downloaded to your computer. If so, the controls will not work fully.
If the problem persists, check that you have a current version of Windows Media Player.
- There is no sound
Does your computer have a sound card? Does it have speakers? Are the speakers separate from the computer? If so, are they turned on?
If yes to all the above, check that the volume control in Windows is not turned down or muted. (If you do not hear the normal Windows sounds when you start your computer, that's a good sign that the volume has been muted.)
- The audio plays, but does not play smoothly
If the problem persists, it is probably because your computer lacks the processing power to handle playing the audios. To test this, try playing audio files from another website and see if you have the same problem.
- The audio plays, the stops, and then plays again
In our tests this was rare: when it happens it is probably due to network congestion: the file is not downloading fast enough, so the audio has to stop for the download to catch up.

| Audio Programs, Podcasting |
If you subscribe to a Sound Education service, you can subscribe to a podcast version. Podcasts use the same MP3 files as are used for listening online, so pdcasts are available for all programs from July 2006 onwards.
Note: to subscribe to a Sound Education podcast, you will need an MP3 player such as an Apple iPod and associated software (eg iTunes) loaded on to your computer. The instructions which follow are for iPod and iTunes users only. Similar processes will apply for other MP3 players.
To subscribe to a podcast follow the instructions below.
Select the service you wish to podcast from the left hand menu (eg Sound Education in Taxation).
- The system will display the submenu for that service.
- From the submenu, select Channel Podcast.
- Alternative: select the Channel Podcast button from the top banner of Recent Papers for the service.
- The system will display a second floating window. This will contain legible information provided your browser supports RSS (Really Simple Syndication) (eg Internet Explorer 7.0 or Firefox 2). If not, it will contain html code.
- The system will also display a page with further instructions on podcasting in the main window
- iPod users: select the Subscribe via iTunes button on the main web page OR
- Other MP3 Players: select Subscribe to this feed in the floating window.
Note: if your browser does not support RSS feeds and there is html code only in the floating window, copy the address loan of the floating window and paste it onto the podcast page of your MP3 player software on your computer. (Windows users: <CTRL> C to copy; <CTRL> V to paste.)
What happens after I subscribe to a channel podcast?
- The titles of all the programs for this service available for podcasting will be downloaded to the podcast section of your podcasting software (eg i-Tunes). Only the first program of the most recent edition will be downloaded.
- Each time your PC is connected to the Internet, the names of any new titles for this service will download to your PC automatically.
How do I download the programs I want to listen to?
- Simply open up i-Tunes or your other podcasting software, go to the podcasting section, and click the Get button for each program you wish to download.
- Synch your i-Pod with i-Tunes, or other MP3 device, and the new programs will download to your i-Pod automatically.
- When using your i-Pod, select the program you wish to listen to.
How do I unsubscribe to this channel?
Open iTunes or equivalent, and go to the podcast section. Highlight the channel you wish to delete, right click on it, and select Delete.
How large are the podcast files?
An average Education Channel program will amount to about 100 Mb of data. Super Basics or Tax Basics programs may be as much as 150 Mb. Be sure to take this into account when subscribing to a podcast.

MP3 Players
|
In addition to subscribing to podcasts, you can copy audio files from the CD we send you to your MP3 Player.
The way this is done will vary from player to player, but all players come with software which you will install on your computer in order to upload music to your portable MP3 player. The same software also manages music downloads from the Internet or from CDs.
Uploading audio files from a Sound Education CD entails the following steps. How these are carried out varies from player to player, and you should refer to your user's manual or the online help files for detailed guidance.
- Upload the audio files from your CD to your computer.
- Convert the audio files from the uncompressed audio CD format to MP3 files.
- Upload the converted files to your MP3 player.
Provided your MP3 player software supports Gracenote, your MP3 player software will automatically download the track names from the Internet, so there will be no need to name them by hand.

Video Programs, Podcasting
|
If you subscribe to an Education Channel service, you can subscribe to a podcast version. Podcasts are available for programs released from November 2007 onwards.
Note: to subscribe to a Sound Education podcast, you will need an MP3 player such as an Apple iPod which supports video playback and associated software (eg iTunes) loaded on to your computer. The instructions which follow are for iPod and iTunes users only. Similar processes will apply for other MP3 players.
To subscribe to a podcast follow the instructions below.
- Select the service you wish to podcast from the left hand menu (eg Lawyers Education Channel).
- The system will display the submenu for that service.
- From the submenu, select Channel Podcast.
- Alternative: select the Channel Podcast button from the top banner of Recent Papers for the service.
- The system will display a second floating window. This will contain legible information provided your browser supports RSS (really simply syndication) (eg Internet Explorer 7.0 or Firefox 2). If not, it will contain html code.
- The system will also display a page with further instructions on podcasting in the main window
- iPod users: select the Subscribe via iTunes button on the main web page OR
- Other MP3 Players: select Subscribe to this feed in the floating window.
Note: if your browser does not support rss feeds and there is html code only in the floating window, copy the address line of the floating window and paste it onto the podcast page of your MP3 player software on your computer. (Windows users: <CTRL> C to copy; <CTRL> V to paste.)
What happens after I subscribe to a channel podcast?
- The titles of all the programs for this service available for podcasting will be downloaded to the podcast section of your podcasting software (eg i-Tunes). Only the first track of the most recent edition will be downloaded.
Open i-Tunes or equivalent, and go to the podcast section. Highlight the channel you wish to delete, right click on it, and select Delete.
How large are the podcast files?
An average 120 minute edition of Sound Education - about five programs - will amount to about 100 Mb of data. Be sure to take this into account when subscribing to a podcast.

Videos, How to View Online
|
If you subscribe to The Education Channel, you can view the videos you receive on your DVD each month online as well. Videos from the March 2006 release of The Education Channel are available online.
Note: to view the videos, your computer and Internet connection must meet certain minimum standards See
Videos, Viewing, Minimum System Requirements.
If you have difficulties viewing the videos online, see Videos, Viewing, Troubleshooting.
To view the videos online, follow the instructions below.
- Select recent papers for your service (see Recent Papers)
- Next to title of each program you are entitled to receive on DVD, you will see a Play Video button. (Note: you will not see this icon next to all program titles.)
- When you have chosen the program you wish to view, select (click on) Play Video.
- If you have a fast broadband connection, the system will display a floating window offering you the choice of high or standard resolution. Click on the radio button of your choice and click on the Select button.
Note: The high resolution version displays in larger floating window than the standard version, and plays well when you select Full Screen. We recommend this version for subscribers playing the program online through an LCD projector.
- The system will launch a floating window listing the program name, and giving you the option to pay the whole program or various segments of it.
- Make your choice and select (click on) the Play button.
- The system will display the video player in the floating window and will commence playing. If you have a small screen or a low screen resolution (eg 800 x 600 pixels) you may need to scroll down or resize the floating window in order to see it.
- Use the controls below the video to pause, fast forward or rewind the video, or to control the volume of the sound.
- Standard resolution subscribers: if you wish to view a larger picture, select (click on) the Double Size button below the picture.
- The system will display the picture double size.
- To return to normal size, select (click on) the Back to Normal button, below the picture.
- If you wish to view the video full screen, select (click on) Full Screen.
- The system will display the video on the screen to the exclusion of everything else. It will be fairly fuzzy!
- To return to the normal size, press the <ESC> key on your keyboard.
- To view other parts of the program, pause the video using the controls below the picture, and then select Play opposite the relevant segment.
- When you have finished, select (click on) Close Window at the bottom of the floating window.
Note:
- While your subscription does entitle you to see the papers for all programs produced for the Education Channel, it will not entitle you to see the videos of every program produced. If the "Play Video" icon does not display, your subscription does not entitle you to view it. See also note 2 below.
- The topics are generally listed before the papers or the videos are loaded. Your video entitlements should always be displayed for the current month within a few days of its commencement.

Videos, Viewing, Minimum System Requirements
|
Our videos do not impose significant overhead on most modern computers. However, there are certain minimum requirements your will need to view them. If you are confused, speak to your system administrator or computer guru!
Your computer must have:
- A sound card
- Speakers
- Windows Vista or Windows XP (Home or Professional) (operating system)
- Pentium 3 processor, equivalent or greater (most do)
- Internet Explorer 6.0 (web browser)
You must have Windows Media Player 9 or higher
- Windows Media Player usually comes pre-installed with Internet Explorer.
- If you do not have it, you can download the current version (WMP 10) free from the Microsoft website:
Visit Microsoft Website
You must have broadband Internet
- Your connection to the Internet must be a broadband connection. Broadband connections are of four types:
- ADSL or DSL or ADSL2+ (this works through your normal phone line)
- Cable (ie PayTV cable)
- Satellite
- Wireless broadband
If you are not sure what you have, speak to your network administrator or Internet Service Provider (ISP).
- Our standard resolution videos have been designed to play over the lowest bandwidth broadband (256 kbps down/64 kbps up). As our videos download to temporary files before they play, the faster your connection, the quicker they will commence to play.
- Our high resolution videos require a connection speed of 1 mbps.
Our service does not support earlier Windows operating systems or any versions of Mac OS (Apple).
The videos may play, but we cannot guarantee it.

Videos, Viewing, Troubleshooting
|
If you are unable to get one of our videos to play, before calling Customer Service, check whether the solution to your problem is in the list below.
- The floating window does not appear when I select Play Video
Your browser may be set to block pop-up windows. Internet Explorer will give you an option when you select Play Video to allow pop-ups permanently from our site. You should select this option.
Alternatively, your security settings may prevent the floating window launching.
If you are having this problem, please speak to your network administrator.
- The floating window appears, but when I select Play nothing happens/the screen does not appear/the controls do not appear.
The most likely cause is that you do not have Windows Media Player installed on your computer, or if you do, you have an earlier version. Get the latest version free from Microsoft.
Visit Microsoft Website
- The video plays, but some of the player controls do not work
If the video has just commenced playing, it is possible that the file containing the video has not been fully downloaded to your computer. If so, the controls will not work fully.
If the problem persists, check that you have a current version of Windows Media Player.
- The video plays, but there is no sound
Does your computer have a sound card? Does it have speakers? Are the speakers separate from the computer? If so, are they turned on?
If yes to all the above, check that the volume control in Windows is not turned down or muted. (If you do not hear the normal Windows sounds when you start your computer, that's a good sign that the volume has been muted.)
- The video plays, but does not play smoothly
If the problem persists, it is probably because your computer lacks the processing power or the video card to handle playing the videos. To test this, try playing video from another website and see if you have the same problem.
- The video plays, the stops, and then plays again
In our tests this was rare: when it happens it is probably due to network congestion: the file is not downloading fast enough, so the video has to stop for the download to catch up.
