Preparing tax returns is a fundamental skill that all accountants must master. However, for junior accountants, there is often a gap in their training when it comes to preparing tax returns in various factual scenarios.

This five part on demand webinar series has been designed to help with the task of training junior tax advisers in the fundamentals of preparing tax returns.

In this series, participants will learn how to complete a tax return for an employed individual, a sole trader, as well as a taxpayer with investment properties. In addition, the series also examines how to complete a company tax return, as well as trust tax returns.

The Programs

Program 1: How to Complete a Tax Return for an Employed Individual

This program will examine the practical side of completing a tax return for an individual who is employed.

  • Understanding the form
  • Salary and wages income
  • Work related deductions
  • Super contributions and salary sacrifice
  • Dividends and imputation
  • Gains and losses on disposals
  • Interest income


Program 2: How to Complete a Tax Return for a Sole Trader

This program will examine the practical side of completing a tax return for an individual who runs a small business as a sole trader

  • Understanding the form
  • Schedule of business income
  • Business deductions
  • Legal expenses and other expenses on capital account
  • Depreciation – pooling – immediate writeoffs
  • Small business income tax offset
  • Superannuation contributions


Program 3: How to Complete a Tax Return for a Taxpayer with Investment Properties

This program will examine the practical side of completing a tax return for an individual who owns one or more investment properties

  • Understanding the investment property schedule
  • Each property on separate schedule
  • Accounting for the income
  • Allowable deductions and items not deductible
  • Income vs capital
  • Depreciation
  • Private use
  • Income losses
  • Capital gain or loss on sale of property


Program 4: How to Complete a Company Tax Return

This program will examine the practical side of completing a tax return for a company carrying on a business.

  • Accounting profit and loss
  • Tax reconciliation statement – tax adjustments – prepayments, depreciation, leasing and finance, fines
  • Understanding company tax rates – base rate entities vs small business entities
  • Paying and receiving franked dividends
  • Carrying forward company losses
  • Capital gains in companies


Program 5: How to Complete a Trust Tax Return

This program will examine the practical side of completing a tax return for a family discretionary trust – either a trading trust or a trust holding investments.

  • Understanding the form
  • Trust income, net income of trust estate, distributable income
  • Present entitlement
  • Streaming of capital gains
  • Streaming of franked dividends
  • Family trust elections
  • Claiming losses
