Practical Tax Fundamentals for Junior Staff: Series 2

ABOUT THE WEBINAR SERIES

For some time, our regular clients have been asking us to help with programs designed to help the task of training more junior tax advisers in the fundamentals of complex, practical tax issues that are commonplace in professional practices today.

Following from the success of our first “Tax Fundamentals” series in 2018, this new series covers the critical areas of tax practice affecting advisers whose clients include SMEs and investors: business and CGT rollovers, small business CGT concessions and applying the main residence exemption. In addition, the series also covers another important compliance issue: GST and BAS reporting requirements.

This video webinar series includes the following components:

  • Online access to the 5 one hour video webinar programs covering the subjects listed below (see the attached brochure for a full description of each of the topics)

  • The 5 programs will be recorded in November and available to subscribers online in early 2020.

  • Online access to the technical support papers and/or powerpoint presentations accompanying each program

The Programs

  1. The Fundamentals of Business and CGT Rollovers - Many clients want to restructure, and restructures always run the risk of triggering a capital gain, despite the fact that no money changes hands. CGT rollovers are designed to allow for business and asset restructures in limited circumstances without triggering CGT. This video webinar examines the main business and CGT rollovers and how they can be used to your client’s advantage.
  2. Small Business CGT Concessions – Part 1 - The small business CGT concessions don’t arise in practice every day but, when a client wants to sell or restructure a business, this is an area of tax law and practice your staff must understand. Part 1 of this two-part webinar on Division 152 covers the basics.
  3. Small Business CGT Concessions - Part 2 - Will cover the application of the concessions where assets are held through entities and the practicalities of claiming each the concessions.
  4. Understanding and Applying the Main Residence Exemption - The main residence exemption applies to nearly every home-owning taxpayer in Australia but advisers need to understand its limits and ensure that clients stay within them. This video webinar will deal with the basic rules and how to best approach common situations affecting the scope of the exemption.
  5. Reporting Requirements – GST and BAS - A key part of an adviser’s role is preparing business activity statements for individual and SME clients. This video webinar examines the basic steps in BAS statement preparation and how to avoid the common mistakes when reporting GST.
