This session will provide a practical guide to affidavit preparation and drafting, including:

  • What makes a good affidavit? What does a judge want to read?
  • Client questioning and information gathering strategies
  • The key to writing persuasively and positively
  • Assessing relevance – what is in and what is out?
  • Language and avoiding the tale of woe
  • Tips on format, content style and numbering
  • Using annexures and exhibits to assist not detract
  • Common affidavit objections and how to avoid them
  • Anticipating cross-examination of the affidavit and building in protections

Glenn Thompson, Director, Newnhams Solicitors, Sydney, NSW

Glenn is acknowledged in Australia as one of the pre-eminent practitioners of Family Law and contributors to its development. He was admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of NSW and the High Court of Australia in 1985. Glenn is an Accredited Family Law Specialist and Fellow of the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. Glenn specialises in all aspects of Family Law including complex property and child related disputes, and has acted for many international clients in various countries in relation to Australian Family Law matters. He has given expert evidence in Family Law.

In 2010 Glenn was awarded the NSW Law Society President’s Medal in recognition of his personal and professional contributions to the betterment of law and justice in NSW. On 12 June 2017 Glenn was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his services to Family Law and the Community.

Glenn is the Chair of the Specialist Accreditation Board in Family Law for NSW, a qualified Arbitrator and a qualified Mediator.
