NSW has become the first jurisdiction in Australia to introduce a suite of defamation law reforms. These far-reaching changes, the first since 2005, implement a number of important measures that will bring defamation law into the digital age. This session examines the Defamation Amendment Bill 2020 and its practical implications, including:

Nell McGill, Special Counsel, Sparke Helmore Lawyers, Newcastle

Nell is a senior commercial litigator, with over 15 years’ experience in dispute resolution. She has a particular focus on contentious personal and corporate insolvency matters, as well as director and shareholder disputes, and debt recovery litigation.

Nell’s work spans a wide range of commercial disputes, from small value claims to significant and complex commercial or insolvency proceedings. Regardless of the size or nature of the claim, Nell approaches all matters with a results-driven attitude and commercial perspective, seeking to minimise risk and impact on productivity and costs for her clients. She regularly appears in New South Wales courts at all levels, and in the Federal Court. She is a strong proponent of utilising alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to achieve efficient and effective results for her clients.

Nell has a Diploma in Law from the Legal Profession Admission Board, a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice, and an Advanced Certification in Insolvency from ARITA.
