About the Webinar

Classifying a property as residential premises or commercial residential premises can make a significant difference to the GST treatment, for the property purchase, sale or a leasing arrangement. This session looks into what defines a property as commercial residential premises and why it matters, including:

  • The characteristics that determine whether a property is or isn’t commercial residential
  • The GST treatment for “short-term” and “long-term” accommodation arrangements
  • Dealing with GST input tax credits for the purchase of a commercial residential property
  • The GST treatment for the sale of a commercial residential property
  • Practical examples of how the GST rules apply to accommodation arrangements in:
    • holiday apartments and units
    • boarding houses
    • a caravan park (GSTB 2001/2)
    • retirement villages
    • bed and breakfast accommodation
    • a room at the Hilton or a room in a residential dwelling

Jeff is a Partner in PwC's Financial Advisory Group and leads the firm’s Indirect Tax Practice in Brisbane.

He has specialised in indirect taxes since 1999 and advises on the entire spectrum of managing its commercial, technical and administrative challenges. His client list ranges from small businesses to some of Australia’s largest public and private companies.

Prior to joining PwC, he was employed by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) as a Senior Director. During his time at the ATO, Jeff had various responsibilities at a national level for the strategic management of technical and compliance issues. In particular, these issues included managing compliance risks in the property sector and the application of the general anti-avoidance rules. He also led some of the Commissioner’s largest and most complex audits.
