A good estate plan takes just that – planning. Unfortunately for some clients, it takes the knowledge that their end of life is close before they suddenly take urgent steps to contact their lawyer to change or put such arrangements in place. Such meetings are always stressful and it can be difficult to ensure that comprehensive proper advice has been given, particularly in deathbed scenarios when assistance is sought at the 11th hour. To assist estate planners manage such stressful and urgent situations, this session shall:

  • Provide an overview of deathbed wills and gifts - when are they legal, in what circumstances can they be challenged, tips for shoring up last minute changes
  • Look at deathbed superannuation withdrawal strategies - do they still work? Alternative options to legitimately withdraw prior to death, impact of capacity etc
  • Consider the family law implications for the estate when a client (or their partner) is on their deathbed and wishes to divorce
  • Review issues arising from joint tenancies and options for severing at short notice

Patrick Huolohan

A long-term Novocastrian, Patrick stayed local and attended the University of Newcastle between 2017 and 2022. During this time, he completed a Bachelor of Commerce (Finance), a Bachelor of Laws (First Class Honours) and a Diploma of Legal Practice.

Midway through his studies, Patrick also strengthened his expertise in financial matters, working as a financial adviser at a leading Newcastle firm and completing a Graduate Diploma of Financial Planning whilst doing so.

Patrick joined Turnbull Hill Lawyers in 2022 to start his legal career, applying the skills and experience he’s built over time whilst ensuring his education and skillset never ceases developing. In 2023, Patrick was admitted to the Supreme Court of New South Wales and the High Court of Australia.

Patrick practices within the Wills and Estates and Family Law teams.

Patrick is currently finalising a Master of Laws (Applied Law) through the College of Law, majoring in Family Law and Wills & Estates.

He assists clients with property and parenting matters, as well as divorce matters. Patrick routinely drafts estate planning documents, simple or complex. He can also advise upon estate-planning and estate matters, both before and after a person passes away. He has particular expertise with matters involving complex financial structures, such as trusts, self-managed superannuation funds and corporations.

This webinar is suitable for lawyers and accountants throughout Australia who advise in estate planning matters. This webinar is for practitioners with some knowledge in this area and looking to improve their knowledge.
