However, boxes still need to be ticked to take advantage of the benefits. This session explores one of those boxes, the holding period rule, and how the ATO are scrutinizing its application, putting the benefits of the credits in jeopardy, including:

Lance Cunningham
Director, BDO Sydney, NSW

Lance is the National Tax Director with BDO Australia and is located in Sydney. In this role, he coordinates the BDO Australian Tax Practice for BDO Australian firms and heads the National Tax Team.

As National Tax Director Lance has the primary function of ensuring the BDO Australian firms are providing appropriate level of tax services to their clients and reducing the level of risk in relation to tax assignments.  This role includes the undertaking of quality assurance reviews for BDO’s Australian tax practices and review of significant tax consulting assignments conducted by the BDO Australian firms. 

This role also involves leading the BDO National Tax Team, which is responsible for tax interpretation and research, preparation and presentation of tax training for BDO partners and staff, the preparation of tax papers and other tax training materials, coordination of BDO tax seminars, conferences and the preparation of client tax up-dates and newsletters.

Lance also liaises with Federal Treasury and the Australian Taxation Office, which includes the preparation of submissions and attending consultation meetings on new tax law and interpretation of current tax law.  Lance is also one of the main liaison persons between BDO and the Australian financial media in relation to current tax related matters.

Lance has over 30 years of professional tax consulting experience with BDO, PKF   and Grant Thornton. Prior to that, Lance worked with the Australian Taxation Office as an Appeals Officer, Tax Auditor and Tax Assessor.

Lance has expertise in a wide range of tax related issues covering various industries as detailed below.
