The most effective risk management strategy for a family lawyer is having a good, trusting, working relationship with their clients. Communication is absolute key to establishing such a relationship. This session shall look at the skills involved with good client communication and how this assists to discharge the ethical obligations a lawyer has to their client and to others. Specifically, this session shall:

  • Summarise the ethical duties and obligations a lawyer has which may be breached through poor communication, including from lapses into informality
  • Look at recent case studies which have attracted criticism of the courts and regulators and workshop how improved communication practices could have prevented these
  • Consider the different reasons for communication, the level of formality required in certain situations and how to ensure all staff maintain appropriate ethical standards when communicating to court and on behalf of the firm
  • Look at the practical issues and risks associated with the use by lawyers or firm of messaging apps

Evelyn Young brings 15 years’ experience exclusively in family law her clients.

Evelyn has extensive experience in all aspects of family law including property disputes, children’s matters, de facto matters, financial agreements, spousal maintenance, surrogacy and child support.

Evelyn is dedicated to understanding and meeting the individual needs and objectives of each client, and guiding them through the family law process with empathy and expertise. Evelyn is also a trained Collaborative Lawyer, and enjoys assisting clients with the Collaborative Practice process.

Evelyn is an Accredited Family Law specialist and is recognised in the 2024 edition of Doyle’s Guide as a Leading Parenting and Children’s Matter Lawyers and Recommended Family & Divorce Lawyers – Melbourne, 2024.

She has written and delivered papers on many areas of family law, and is a regular presenter. She was the joint winner of the 2015 LIV Rogers Legal Writing Award for the best contribution to the Law Institute Journal.

Evelyn is a member of the Family Law Advisory Committee to the Accreditation Board of the Law Institute of Victoria for Family Law.
