Doctor Elizabeth Morton (Lizzie) is a Senior Lecturer in the Curtin Law School working remotely from Victoria. Lizzie's aim is to empower the tax profession facing contemporary ethical and competency challenges as the digital economy evolves. Lizzie strategically positions her research and engagement across three core complimentary themes: tax compliance, the digital economy, and practitioner competencies. This area of interest reflects a prior career in practice, and therefore connectedness, with the tax profession.
Her philosophy permeates through leadership in education. Tax students represent the next generation of tax practitioners. Elizabeth's aim is to ensure future tax practitioners are digital-ready by creating opportunities for critical thinking and creating awareness of the complexities faced by practitioners in real time. The digital economy offers both fascinating opportunities to delve into contemporary interpretations of tax law whilst enabling robust, real-world practical scenarios to work through for competent, ethical outcomes for taxpayers. Along with peer-reviewed and industry journals, Elizabeth engages with industry through channels such as discussion groups, policy submissions, articles, blogs, seminars, podcasts and radio. Along with other roles, Elizabeth is on the Academic Board of the Tax Institutes as well as co-author of Bevacqua et al.’s Australian Taxation (Wiley).
Prior to academia, Elizabeth worked as an accountant in small business taxation in regional Victoria. Her professional experience includes various aspects of accounting and taxation services for all entity types, including matters in relation to capital gains tax and investments, GST and FBT compliance, as well as superannuation.
As well as other associations, Elizabeth is a Fellow of the Tax Institute, member of the Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA), member of the Institute of Public Accountants (IPA) and the Accounting and Finance Association of Australia and New Zealand (AFAANZ).
Recorded Webinar: Ethics in the Age of Tech: Navigating Emerging Tools in Accounting and Tax Practice
Date/Time
About the Webinar
From AI to automation, the rise of emerging technologies is transforming how accountants work. But while these tools promise efficiency and insight, they also raise new ethical questions. This session explores how the profession’s ethical obligations—under APES 110 and the TASA 2009 —interact with the practical use of new technologies in accounting and tax practices. Topics include:
- Overview of key technologies reshaping accounting and taxation practices: AI, automation, blockchain, and data analytics
- How the APES 110 and TASA2009 codes applies to technology-assisted service delivery
- Protecting client confidentiality in cloud-based and automated environments
- Professional competence and reliance on third-party tech tools
- Ethical issues when outsourcing or automating elements of tax, audit, or advisory work
- Transparency, engagement and fee structures: Are clients aware of the role of technology in their service?
- Ensuring independence and objectivity when using predictive tools and auto-generated advice
